Parts for Dana-Spicer Model 60 and Model 61 Front Axles in 1975-1993 Dodge 4x4 Trucks

We stock a complete line of parts for the open knuckle, Dana-Spicer Model 60 Front Axle which was first used by Dodge in the 1 ton W300 and W350 4x4 trucks for the 1975 model year. The newly released Model 60 axle used the same size axle universal joint as the previous Model 70 closed knuckle axle, but the new open knuckle design had a sharper turning angle which substantially improved vehicle maneuverability.

The Model 60 as used by Dodge from 1975 to 1993 has very durable greaseable king pins and disc brakes. The wheel bearings are serviceable and the dead-spindle configuration allows the use of lockout hubs. The only major design change during the 18 year production run.....(continued below)

All 1984-1993 Dana 60 and 61 Front Axles in Dodge Ram trucks had a Bill of Material Number (BOM) stamped on a Build Tag (red arrow) attached to the differential by two of the differential cover bolts (yellow arrows) when the vehicle was shipped from the factory but, unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service. 1977-1983 Axles will usually have the BOM number stamped on the front side of the right axle tube. The BOM number is a 6 digit number beginning with a 6 plus a dash number (ex: 610604-2). They can be used to determine not only the axle model, but also what components the axle was originally built with. We often ask for this number to insure we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.

Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio and, for some years, the front wheel hub style (for single or dual rear wheel models).

Both Model 60 and 61 axles share almost all the same parts except for the axle housing and gear sets. The Model 60 was designed in an era of small engines requiring low gears to move the vehicle so the lowest numeric ratio it was designed for was 3.54:1. By the mid 1980's, fuel economy became paramount so lower numeric gears were needed to reduce the engine rpm, especially with non-overdrive transmissions and/or slow turning diesel engines. The Model 61 has the pinion center line set farther from the ring gear so a larger diameter pinion head can be accommodated. For Dodge front axles, the Model 61 was only available with 3.07 and 3.54 ratio gear sets. Depending on the year and engine, the Model 60 could be ordered with 3.54, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, or 5.86 gearing.

  Steering Linkage: 1975-1993 uses a tie rod that attaches to each steering knuckle. Drag link goes from steering gear to cast iron arm bolted to the top of the drivers side steering knuckle.  
  Knuckle Mounting: Greaseable King Pins. Upper uses spring loaded plastic bushing rotating on a tapered King Pin. Lower has taper roller bearing.

Wheel Hub: Two types of wheel hubs were used by Dodge for Dana 60 and Dana 61 front axles. Early and mid production trucks used a wheel hub that took 8 bolt, externally mounted drive flanges or lockout hubs. Late production trucks used an internally splined wheel hub. Each hub type had a version for single rear wheel trucks and dual rear wheel trucks. There is conflicting documentation on the exact dates of the change over from external type hub mounting to internal, most likely due to the fact trucks were being manufactured in Canada, Mexico, and the United States at the same time and each plant probably made the switch when their inventory of axles with external type hubs was used up. According to Dodge parts books, all 1989 and prior models have the external mount hub. Dana however, lists both external and internal hubs for 1989. Our own experience has been that 1989 models all have external type hubs, but we believe there may be some late production 89's with the internal hub. For 1990 to 1991, Dodge lists both external and internal hubs. Dana lists only internal. We have seen a few 1990 models with external hubs, but most are internal. For 1991, most if not all, trucks should have internal hubs, but we did work on at least one 1991 dually with external hubs, so presumably there are more out there. 1992 and 1993 is easy, Dodge, Dana, and our experience, all agree these years will have internal hubs.

The 1975-1991 external, 8 bolt type wheel hub was factory equipped with either a splined steel drive flange or Selectro® lock out hubs with big cast aluminum selector knobs. 1990-1993 Internal spline wheel hubs had factory installed Warn® plastic dial lockout hubs.

Axle Shaft Inner Oil Seals and Axle Shaft Inner Oil Seal Kits
An Inner Axle Seal is pressed in the inboard end of each axle tube, right next to the differential side bearings. These seals contact the inner axle shafts to prevent gear oil from running out of the differential and down the axle tubes. Old age, blown axle u-joints, and/or grit that works it's way into the axle tubes and cuts the seal are the usual causes of failure. A bad Inner Axle Shaft Seal can be detected by oil coming out the end of the axle tubes next to the axle shaft u-joint. Usually when these Seals start to fail, they will seep oil so the leakage may go undetected for quite some time. Many a ring and pinion set has been burned up from axles that lost all their lube when long term seepage was not noticed.

Axle disassembly including differential removal is required to replace the Seals.

Brake Parts
Brake Splash Shields deflect road splash and grit from the brake rotors. Rust from road salts or corrosive soils is the most common cause for replacement. The shields can also be bent or torn from hitting rocks off road or from accident damage. Another cause of wrecked shields is incorrect service procedures including driving a chisel between the spindle and knuckle during disassembly. We also stock some hard-to-find brake small parts.

Gaskets and Gasket Makers
In the mid 1970's Dana made a differential cover design change to heavy gauge covers with flat mating flanges. Unlike the previous, thin gauge covers with embossed flanges which were made for use with a cut gasket, the new design, thick gauge covers are designed for sealing with RTV. If you desire, you can still use a gasket with the new type cover by combining the gasket with thin films of RTV. We stock both Ultra Gray RTV Sealant and genuine Dana Gaskets. Hub Assemblies and Hub Parts
Dodge used 2 types of front Dana 60 wheel hubs on King Pin type Dana 60 or Dana 61 front axles with each type available for single rear wheel or dual rear wheel mounting flange offsets. From 1975 until around early 1991, the wheel hub is drilled and tapped with eight 3/8" USS bolt holes for mounting an external drive flange or Selectro locking hub. In 1991, these hubs were phased out in favor of a hub with internal splines for mounting a Warn plastic dial locking hub. The wheel bearings and seals are the same for all years and models. King Pin Kits and King Pin Parts

Pinion Yokes, Pinion Seals, and Pinion Yoke Parts
From 1975 through 1980, most Dodge Dana 60 front axles used pinion yokes for the small Spicer 1310 series universal joint, although you will find 7260 series joints in some 1975.5-1980 trucks. From 1981 through 1992, the even smaller Detroit 7260 u-joint was original equipment. Dodge finally saw the light and fitted almost all of 1993 model year trucks with the adequate sized Detroit 7290 series universal joint which was desperately needed with trucks powered by the Cummins Diesel engine. Ring and Pinion Kits
Unless your axle has run out of oil or it is severely abused, you will probably never have to replace your original ring and pinion set. However, if you do need one, we stock original equipment Dana-Spicer Gear Sets for your vintage Dodge Dana 60 or Dana 61 front axle. These genuine gear sets are not cheap when compared to the host of knock off Asian import gear sets being pushed into the market place by vendors focused on getting the cheapest stuff they can. Well, like anything, you get what you pay for. I have been setting up Dana Gear Sets since the mid 1970's to date, and I have never had a setup problem with a genuine Dana-Spicer Gear Set. The same is not true for the aftermarket parts. Besides having sloppy machining, most aftermarket gears are not made to use the Dana factory set up tools, so a person usually has to apply some blood-boiling "Kentucky Windage" to the setup procedure to make progress! Spindles and Spindle Nuts
Dodge use the same QU40293D front spindle on all 1975 to 1993 4x4 trucks with the Model 60 or 61 open knuckle front drive axle. Spindle nuts are a different story. Dodge used a 2-9/16" hex nut with a bend over tab lock washer from 1975 to 1991. For 1992 and 1993, a round 4 slot nut double nut design was used. It is not uncommon to find the newer nuts set used on the older trucks or vice a versa. We used to see this a lot on fleet trucks where the nut styles were apparently changed for standardization reasons.

These are the parts we have used on customer trucks since that time. So if you need the entire nut set for your 1975-1991 4x4, and wish to save a few $$, order this Set instead of 2 QU11070 nuts and 1 QU40051 Washer, just remember the hex size is slightly smaller!

Wheel Bearing and Seal Kits
Dodge used the same wheel bearing and seal numbers for the entire 1975 to 1993 production run of Dana 60 and Dana 61 King Pin type front drive axles. However, spindle nut sets and lockout hubs will vary year. Wheel hubs will vary by both year and if the truck had single or dual rear wheels. For 1975 to 1989, all the trucks used QU11070 hex spindle nuts, QU40051 spindle lock washer, and externally mounted drive flanges or lockout hubs using QU50216 hub gasket. 1990 and 1991 were transition years. During 1990, the external mount type wheel hub was phased out by an internally splined wheel hub, but the hex spindle nut configuration was retained for 1990 and most of the 1991 production. You may find some later 1991s with QK4729 round spindle nut set. For 1992 and 1993, the change over was complete. All trucks would have internally splined wheel hubs and use the round, QK4729 4 slot spindle nut set.

(continued from above).....of this axle was a change in 1990-1991 from wheel hubs using externally mounted free wheel hubs (or drive flanges) to hubs with splined internal mount lockouts. Available factory gear sets over the years included 3.54, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, and 5.86 ratio ring and pinions. Model 61 axles can be found in 1987 to 1993 model year trucks with 3.07 or 3.54 ratio gear sets. The model 61 is basically a modified Model 60 with a different ring gear offset to accommodate a larger diameter pinion gear. Except for the differential housing and some differential components, all the parts are interchangeable between the two models. You will find these fine axles in almost all Dodge 1 ton models from 1975 to 1993, plus all the 1989 to 1993 Cummins Diesel W250 and W350 4x4s. The only 1 ton exceptions are a few 1975 W300 trucks with the Model 70 closed knuckle axle, and a small number of mid 1980's trucks with wimpy Model 44 axles that Dodge badged as W-350 1 ton models. Dodge was the last vehicle manufacturer to offer a truck with a King Pin front 4x4 Model 60, discontinuing this axle at the end of the 1993 model year. The redesigned 1994 Dodge Model 60 uses ball joints instead of king pins and has a live-spindle, non-serviceable wheel hub.
