transmission, always check for wear on the internal splines of
the 5th gear clutch and the corresponding splines in the
countershaft. The clutch is a loose slip-fit on the
countershaft. On a new shaft with a new clutch, a dial
indicator mounted to the countershaft and indicating off a
synchro tooth will read about .010". |

Tech Tip: If you have an older NV4500 with the integral
shift tower (GM to 1994, Dodge to 1997), and you have trouble
shifting into gear (usually 3rd or 4th), the culprit may be a
worn shift tower seat. A very strong spring exerts down
pressure against the shift stub. Over time, the stub will
wear into the integral aluminum seat. In extreme cases,
the seat wears to the point where the shift stub base will hit
the shift rail. When this happens, the friction between
the rail and stub can make shifting very difficult. The
solution is to replace the cover assembly with the later style
model (QU10706) with a removable shift tower.
