Bearing Retainer Plates
We stock the the two Rear Bearing Retainer Thrust Plates for your NV4500 Transmission. In most cases, Bearing Retainer replacement will not be necessary, but if the ground flat thrust face on either, or both of your retainers is worn or damaged, you will need to replace the retainer to obtain accurate shaft end-play adjustment.

Countershafts (Lower Shafts)
The original countershaft used in the NV4500, had replaceable front gears (see QU10090 and our Countershaft Gearing). The shaft was changed to a one-piece design after GM discontinued the 6.34:1 reverse and switched to the 5.61:1 reverse ratio that Dodge used. Typically, Countershaft gear tooth failures occur from one of three causes: low or improper oil, clutch pilot bearing failures (which cause misalignment of the input shaft), and excessive horsepower/torque (over 275hp/600 lb-ft of torque). Broken 3rd gear teeth are almost always caused by exceeding the 600 lb.ft input strength limit of the NV4500.

Countershaft Gears
Early production NV4500 transmissions used a modular Countershaft (see QU10090) that featured replaceable, press-fit front gears for gear ratio changes. All 1992-1994 transmissions used the modular design. We have also seen these countershafts used on a number of 1995 transmissions. A few may have been used as late as 1996 model year trucks with low production drive-train combinations. The Countershaft 5th gear is located behind the countershaft rear bearing and its is supported by QU10141Caged Needle Bearing.

Main Drive Gears (Input Shafts)
We stock a selection of Original Equipment (OE) quality and Aftermarket NV4500 Main Drive Gears. As always, OE quality parts are the best choice for Diesel and high-performance gas applications. Our Aftermarket gears are a great choice for the budget overhaul or for standard gas engine trucks. The two biggest killers of Main Drive Gears are: #1 Problem is a failed clutch pilot bearing or bushing which chews up the tip and can cause gear tooth breakage from misalignment. #2 Running the transmission low on oil or with the wrong oil. Another cause is excessive horsepower which can cause either tooth breakage or the shaft to twist off. While it is possible to install an 1-3/8" input in a Dodge application to minimize the chances of the shaft twisting off, little real benefit is gained for most applications because the rest of the transmission is still maxing out at 600 lb-ft of torque.

Mainshafts (Output Shafts)
Most NV4500 transmissions behind Diesel engines will need a Mainshaft sometime during the vehicle life-cycle due to wear in the 5th gear area. Mainshaft 5th Gear issues are mostly caused by the inability of stock and full-spline Mainshafts to adequately support the 5th Gear. Our patented Torque King® Mainshaft Sets are the only true, proven solution to the problem. However, there is still a place for stock and full spline shafts in less demanding situations or in cases where financial and/or application issues preclude using a Torque King® permanent solution. For more information on the causes and cures of typical 5th Gear failures, see our Tech Article: Fifth Gear Failures and Solutions. Mainshaft Interchangeability: The NV4500 transmission is a marvelously adaptable transmission for use in any number of conversion scenarios. As far as the main case and reverse through 4th gearing, any 4500 Mainshaft can be swapped into any 4500 transmission. However, such a swap will also require one or more other changes which may include the Mainshaft 5th gear, Mainshaft Nut Set, Mainshaft Spacer or Vibration Damper, Speedometer Drive, and Tailshaft Housing.

Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: Guys and Gals, we discuss the pros and cons of the full spline designs in my tech article: 5th Gear Failures and Solutions. The advantage of these shafts is they will get you back on the road for a reasonable amount of time and at a low cost. The disadvantage is no full spline shaft will prevent 5th gear loss because they do not address the cause of the problem. All full spline shafts of this type, made by anybody and sold by anybody are inherently weaker than stock and Torque King® shafts due to the groove machined in the shaft for the 3 piece thrust washer set. In addition, the 3-4 synchro hub spline, rear output bearing location, and 5th gear splines are machined undersize which can lead to long-term wear issues. The bottom line is: if you need a shaft and you can't afford a Torque King® Shaft Set, then, full spline shafts are the only other option despite the drawbacks.

Mainshaft Spacers and Dampers
GM transmissions all use some type of Spacer or Damper between the Mainshaft 5th Gear and nut set or yoke. These parts make GM transmissions generally more resistant to 5th gear failures when compared to Dodge units. In fact, GM 4x2 transmissions almost never suffer from that malady.

QU10172 GM 4x4 Vibration Damper  was used instead of QU10173 Spacer on both gas and Diesel 4x4 transmissions with certain year and engine combinations. The Damper is located between the back of the mainshaft 5th gear and the nut set. This hefty part is designed to be an interference fit on the mainshaft, so, besides minimizing felt vibration,it helps keep the the fifth gear from loosening up and working the nut off. However, if the damper does not fit the shaft correctly, it will accelerate the loosing of the mainshaft nut due to centrifugal force. Reverse Idler Gears and Shafts
Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: 1996 and earlier Early NV4500 transmissions utilized a two-plane reverse with either 5.61:1 or 6.34:1 Reverse Gear ratios. With a two-plane reverse, the front half of the wide reverse idler gear receives power from the countershaft and it uses the the rear half to transfer power to the large diameter mainshaft reverse gear. Single-plane reverse was introduced for 1997 model year trucks. The power transfer is inline between the countershaft, narrow reverse idler gear, and small diameter mainshaft reverse gear. The idlers, countershafts, reverse gears, and transmission cases are not interchangeable for the two types of reverse gear systems. Our Reverse Idler Gears and Shafts are accurately made and precision ground in U.S.A. for precise fit, quiet operation, and long bearing life.

Shift Covers
The 1992-1994 GM and 1992-1997 Dodge NV4500 Transmissions used a top cover with and integral shift tower. Transmissions with the early covers are more difficult to remove and install unless your truck has a removable cab floor pan. The early covers worked well, but they are subject to wear in the concave ball seat that supports the shift stub. A badly worn seat can cause all kinds of shifting difficulties in an otherwise sound transmission. The later design, flat top cover with a removable tower is less prone to wear in the shift tower. Early and late covers are interchangeable as far as fitting the transmission goes, but you have to make sure you order the correct stub or tower to match your shifter when changing top cover types.

Tech Note icon Dan the Gear Man® Tech Tip: If you have an older NV4500 with the integral shaft tower (GM to 1994, Dodge to 1997), and you have trouble shifting into gear (usually 3rd or 4th) the culprit may be a worn shift tower seat. A very strong spring exerts down pressure against the shift stub. Over time, the stub will wear into the integral aluminum seat. In extreme cases, the seat wears to the point where the shift stub base will hit the shift rail. When this happens, the friction between the rail and stub can make shifting very difficult or cause the shifter stub to jump out of the rail notch. The solution is to replace the cover assembly.

Shift Forks
The NV4500 transmission does not usually have problems with Shift Fork wear except for some GM models with one-piece Reverse Forks. When significant wear does occur, the root cause is usually grossly excessive shaft end-play caused by either oil problems or just a lot of miles. The fifth and reverse forks can be replaced without much trouble, but if you need to replace the 1-2 or 3-4 forks, cover modification is required. Shift Stubs and Towers
Early versions of the NV4500 Transmission used a spring loaded shift stub that was retained by one of 2 styles of twist-lock cap (See QU10733). A redesigned shift cover featuring a bolt-on removable tower replaced the original design starting in the 1995 model for GM and 1998 for Dodge (See QU10706). The supply of Stub Kits for the early covers is dwindling fast as is the inventory of U.S.A. made genuine NVG bolt-on towers, spacers, bolts, and bushings. We will continue to supply these good OEM parts as long as our supply lasts. If you have an early cover, any of our Shift Stubs and Shift Stub Kits can be will fit your cover but you need to match the stub connection to your lever. For the later style covers, you have to not only match your shift lever thread, but also verify the cover type if using a GM cover (See Tech Note Below). Tech Note icon Dan The Gear Man® Tech TIp: When servicing your transmission, always check for wear on the internal splines of the 5th gear clutch and the corresponding splines in the countershaft. The clutch is a loose slip-fit on the countershaft. On a new shaft with a new clutch, a dial indicator mounted to the countershaft and indicating off a synchro tooth will read about 0.10".
I strongly recommend you use QU10031 Genuine 5th gear clutch for Cummins Diesel truck or high performance gas applications. The 5th gear clutch is one of the weakest parts in an NV4500, so you need the OE quality of the QU10031 for the longest life. QU10202 Aftermarket Clutch is a decent part at a good price, but it is not the BEST part for your Torque Monster.

(continued from above)....plant almost all of our Genuine NVG/MTM gears and shafts are taken from brand new, first class transmissions that we have disassembled for parts. These parts are in perfect condition. NEWS UPDATE 1/18/2008 with the total closure of the Genuine NVG/MTM plant and the failure of American Gear and Transmission (AGT), availability of quality NV4500 parts is becoming quite limited. AGT was unable to bring the NV4500 back into production after they bought the NV4500 production rights and tooling. AGT's NV4500 tooling was liquidated at a nationally advertised auction in 2007. You will see an increasing number of our genuine NV4500 parts will be listed as SOLD OUT! There is still hope that somebody will again produce Original Equipment quality parts for the NV4500, so we will continue to display out-of-stock NV4500 items on our web pages.
E Rosebud Creek Montana
About 40 miles from our location, East Rosebud Creek Tumbles out of the Beartooth Mountain Wilderness. Across the Creek are scorched remnants of a major forest fire that swept down the Canyon and out into the the plains in 1996. Running alongside the creek is a very popular 26 mile long hiking trail that takes you into the heart of the wilderness as the trail winds it's way from Alpine Lake on the north side of the Beartooth Mountains to Cooke City, Montana near Yellowstone Park.
