Rear Dana Axle Parts for 1994-2002 Dodge Ram
Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 Trucks with Dana-Spicer Axles
1994-2002 Dodges used the Dana 60 on some light GVW gas trucks. Most small V8 2500 models and most Cummins powered 2500 series trucks with automatic transmissions use a Dana 70. All Cummins trucks with manual transmissions and all 3500 series trucks use the Dana 80.

Although the basic design of these Dana axles has been well proven over many decades, you should remember that until the late 1980's, very few work vehicles ever saw the far side of 150,000 miles.... (Continued below)

All 1994-2002 Dana Rear Axles in Dodge Ram trucks have a Bill of Material Number (BOM) stamped on a Build Tag (red arrow) attached to the differential by two of the differential cover bolts (yellow arrows). The BOM number is a 6 digit number beginning with a 6 plus a dash number (ex: 605523-3). They can be used to determine not only the axle model, but also what components the axle was originally built with. We often ask for this number to insure we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.

Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio and differential type (open or locking). Unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service.

Not all Dana axles have the model number cast on the housing. It can be very difficult to tell a Dana 60 from a Dana 70, as they have nearly identical covers with exactly the same bolt pattern. One way to tell if you have a Dana 60 or Dana 70 is to measure the cover flange height (yellow arrow). The Dana 60 flange height is approximately 1" high. The Dana 70 flange height is about 1¼" high.

QU40294 ABS Tone Ring for Dana 80 Rear Axles in 1994-2002 Dodge Trucks is a genuine original equipment toothed ring that is an interference fit on your Dana 80 differential case.
Tech Note icon All 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks are equipped with anti-lock brakes. Both rear wheel and four-wheel anti-lock brake systems use the same rear axle sensor components. In addition to providing a signal for brake control, the system is also used to generate a signal for the speedometer on 1998-2002 trucks. The rear axle ABS system used on this era of Dodge trucks is rather crude by today's standards. The signal is generated by a toothed steel tone ring pressed on the differential case next to the ring gear. A magnetic pickup is located in the top of the axle housing above the tone ring. Since the unit is sensing differential speed and not the speed of either rear wheel, it can not be used to selectively apply the individual rear brakes. The tone rings are not a wear item and usually only need to be replaced when there has been a catastrophic failure of the gear set or differential.

Differential Bearing and Seal Kits Featuring Timken Bearings and Genuine Dana-Spicer Small Parts
Tech Note icon Gear set breakage caused by worn and loose Differential Bearings is one of the biggest killers of rear axles. When the differential bearings wear, the backlash between the ring gear and pinion gear will change. Most often, it increases as the ring gear side differential bearing usually takes the brunt of the wear. As the backlash increases beyond approximately 0.010", the chances of breaking a gear tooth increase dramatically. Additionally, a rough and worn differential bearing is very likely to break free and spin on the differential case which will usually mean the case must be replaced. With the Model 60 and Model 70, one often finds the differential bearing cups have worn sideways into the axle housing (Model 80 axles have a steel spacer between the cup and housing). Sometimes, the wear is minor and can be compensated for by re-shimming the differential, but in most cases, the axle bore faces will need to be re-cut with an Axle Bore Facing Tool such as the QT1000 or the axle housing will need to be replaced. To minimize the chances of wrecking expensive differential parts, I recommend completely re-bearing Dana 60 and 70 axles every 125,000 miles and Dana 80's at or before 150,000 miles. DANA 60: The Trac-Lok™, which features a one-piece differential case was the option for all Model 60 axles. DANA 70: All Model 70 axles could be equipped with the optional Powr-Lok™ differential with a two-piece differential case. DANA 80: Both the Powr-Lok™ and Trac-Lok™ were used in the Model 80. Powr-Lok™ differentials were an option for 1994 to 1998 model years. Production of Model 80 Powr-Lok™ units and internal gears ceased in 1998. Tech Note icon Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: Starting in 2000, Dodge used several Pinion Seal and Pinion Yoke combinations for each axle model. If you have a 2000, 2001, or 2002 model year axle, you have to identify the type of slinger installed on your original yoke and the type of seal. Some early 2000 Model 60 and 70 axles came with the old style single seal and grooved slinger. Later models and all 2000-2002 Dana 80 axles used one of two types of two-piece seals. On these later axles, most Dana 60 and 70 yokes either do not use a slinger, or have a now discontinued flat slinger. However, MOST 2000-2002 Model 80 yokes had a flat slinger.

Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: Oil seal leaks can be very vexing with rear axle applications. The most common cause is simply the axle vent system is plugged. When this happens, pressure builds up as the axle warms up during operation until the weakest seal fails. The cure is easy, clean the vent hose and/or fittings (usually found on the left axle tube). Another common cause is a seal wears a groove in the pinion yoke or spindle surfaces. With the pinion yoke, replacing the yoke is the way to go. Worn spindles are a bit tougher to deal with. Often, installing the seal at a different depth will do the trick. If that does not work, replacing the welding-on spindles is the best solution, but it is a major, high-dollar job that requires a big lathe and a skilled mechanic.

Installing stainless steel wear sleeves marketed by most major seal manufacturers would seem like a viable alternative, unfortunately, this type of repair rarely lasts long. Why? A worn sleeve increases the diameter of the yoke or spindle by 0.020"-0.040". When a stock seal, engineered for the original yoke or spindle diameter is installed over a wear sleeve, the larger installed diameter of the sleeve causes the seal to run hotter and wear much faster than normal. Result: Rapid seal wear and presto! the oil leak is back. If available, an oil bath type wheel seal would really be the best solution, but availability for the sizes used on Dodge trucks is poor.

Spindle Nuts and Spindle Nut Locks
The original equipment Spindle Nut and Lock Wedge are designed to be installed once and only once. For safety reasons, you must discard both the nut and wedge if they are removed from the spindle for any reason. Both parts loose a percentage of their resistance to coming off when they are removed. You may hear of cases where this type of factory nut has come off while the truck was being driven. Invariably, these failures involve nuts and wedges that have been reused. I am not aware of a single instance of a properly installed new nut and wedge coming off like that. With the power and durability of Cummins Diesel and fuel injected gas engines and the severe loads they can impose on the drivetrain, you should plan on doing a complete re-bearing job on your 1984-2002 rear axle every 125,000-150,000 miles to prevent catastrophic failures. A number of engineering changes were made by Dana over the 1994-2002 model years. Most of these occurred between 1999 and 2001. After producing axles for Dodge trucks since the 1950's, Dana lost the contract to produce rear drive axles for Dodge to American Axle Manufacturing (AAM was once the GM Axle Division) effective for the 2003 model year.

Snowblower Carbon Cty Montana

The great guys with the County Road Crew use an Oshkosh 4x4 Snow Blower to clear the road above Quad 4x4. Winter brings a variety of weather to our area, but one constant weather condition is the frigid southeast winds that follow after every snowfall. The East Bench, which parallels Clear Creek is nicknamed the Arctic Bench for the frigid, blasting wind that piles the snow in dense drifts. When the drifts get too tough for snowplows, the County sends out the big snow blower to clear the roads. Interestingly enough, our protected location along Clear Creek, at the base of the bench, has less wind and very little drifting. In fact, some years we don't even have to plow our driveway!
