We stock a good selection of parts and tools for Dana 44 open knuckle front drive axles for 1966 to 1979 Ford F-100, F-150, and 1971 to 1979 Ford Broncos. Although all axles for these years Ford Bronco and 1/2 ton trucks are of the open knuckle type (axle u-joint is exposed), there is a very significant Steering Knuckle design change between 1971 to 1972 for the trucks and 1972 to 1973 for the Bronco. The early Knuckles used King Pins and King Pin Bearings to support the Knuckle, while the later trucks use Ball Joints.

Axle Universal Joints
Ford increased the axle u-joint size from small to medium on F-100/F-150 Dana 44 axles for the 1973 model year, however the Bronco continued to use the smaller u-joints through the 1977 model year. The new body style Bronco, introduced as a 1978 model, is based on the F-150, so it also has medium size axle u-joints. Before ordering axle u-joints for transition year models, verify the diameter of the axle universal joint cups!
1966-1972 F- 100 and 1971-1977 Bronco: Axle U-Joint Cup Size is 1-1/16".
1973-1979 F-100/F-150 and 1978-1979 Bronco: Axle U-Joint Cup Size is 1-3/16"
For the early, small 1-1/16" u-joint we have only one non-greaseable choice as the small cross will lose too much strength if drilled for lube channels. We offer two different medium size 1-3/16" Universal Joints. Both are good, reliable products, but different manufacturing techniques and seal types will have a major influence on the ultimate life of the joint under most conditions.

QU40792 1966-1972 Ford F-150 and 1971-1977 Bronco Dana 44 Small Front Axle Shaft U-Joint is a hot-forged, original equipment, non-greaseable, front axle shaft universal joint with 1-1/16" diameter cups. This is the strongest production u-joint we know of for this application.

Ball Joints 1972-1979 F-100 F150, & 1973-1979 Bronco (See King Pins for 1966-1971 F-100 and 1971-1972 Bronco)
The 1972-1979 Ford Dana 44 Beam Type open knuckle front axle uses replaceable Ball Joints pressed into the steering knuckle. Both Ball Joints are weight bearing. A threaded adjuster that screws into the upper hole of the axle yoke is used to provide preload on the Ball Joints. Dana has modified the seal configuration, but the high quality and basic Ball Joint design has remained unchanged since the early 1970's. Over the years we have found the average Ball Joint life of our non-greaseable, factory Dana Ball Joints to be 7 to 10 years for vehicles used as daily drivers and/or work trucks.

Gaskets and Gasket Makers
In the mid 1970's Dana made a differential cover design change to heavy gauge covers with flat mating flanges. Unlike the previous, thin gauge covers with embossed flanges which were made for use with a cut gasket, the new design, thick gauge covers are designed for sealing with RTV. If you desire, you can still use a gasket with the new type cover by combining the gasket with thin films of RTV. We stock both Ultra Gray RTV Sealant and genuine Dana Gaskets.
