QU20039 Inner Axle Shaft Guide There is one of these guides located next to the differential section in each axle tube. The Guide lifts and centers the axle shaft to the Inner Axle Seal (QU40244) when an axle shaft is installed. These guides are usually destroyed when makeshift tools are used in an attempt to remove the Inner Axle Seals (See QK4647 Seal Remover)

QU40244 Inner Axle Shaft Seals are genuine original equipment oil-bath type seals. Your Inner Axle Shaft Seals are located in the differential housing just outboard of the differential bearings. If you are leaking oil out the end of your axle tubes, these are the seals that need to be replaced.

Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note About Knuckle Seal Design Change: The original 1st design knuckle seal design (left) is unshielded and was used from 1999 to early 2002. A 2nd design, redesigned seal with a shield on the inboard side (right) was introduced in 2002 calender year as a 2003 model year part. The early QU40233 seals will work on all 1999-2004 Super Duty's. The later, QU20035 shielded seal will only fit outer axles with a step diameter of approximately 3.115". Most Trucks built prior to mid 2002 will have outer shafts with a step diameter of 3.210" which will not accept the shielded seal. We recommend you order replacement seals that match the seal type your truck originally came with. Our new, QU40318 series replacement outer axle shafts have the 3.115" step and can be used with either seal style.

Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note About Knuckle Seal Installation: Ford knuckle seals are the toughest seals to install we have ever come across.  The seal is of a complicated unitized design that is easily damaged without the correct installer.  In fact, the knuckle seal is virtually impossible to install without damage unless a tool like our one piece, rugged 12 pound QT1515 Knuckle Seal Installer is used to drive or press the seal on.  Not only is the seal an extremely tight fit to the shaft, it also must be installed to a specific depth on both the axle shaft and in the knuckle.  A damaged seal will allow water to enter and vacuum to escape.

Over the years, Dana Spicer has primarily used Timken bearings when building their axles. For long life and dimensional consistency, Timken bearings are unmatched by any other brand of bearing I have used rebuilding axles over the past 30+ years in the business. When you are a shade tree mechanic dealing with a diff and pinion rebearing job without all the fancy gauging tools we have, you always want your new bearings to be the same overall thickness as the original bearings were when the axle was built so your pinion depth, pinion preload and backlash are within the tolerance limits when you are done with the job.
