Parts for Dana-Spicer Closed Knuckle Model 60 Front Axles in 1973-1975 Ford 4x4 Trucks

We stock a good selection of parts and Tools for 1973 to 1975 Ford F-250 Crew Cab Dana 60 closed knuckle front drive axles. The closed knuckle, monobeam, Dana-Spicer Model 60 front axle F-250 Crew Cab was the first Dana 60 front axle ever used by Ford and the only Model 60 closed knuckle front axle ever factory installed in production civilian 4x4s (1967-1969 Jeep M715 military trucks also used a closed knuckle Dana 60 front axle).

The Crew Cab F-250 was primarily marketed to fleet users with the builders of the Alaskan pipeline being a major user. The new axle, which was rated for only 3800 pounds, used the same hubs, spindles, and outer axle shafts as the Ford Dana 44HD 3500 pound front axle optionally installed in contemporary F-250 regular cab pickups. The closed knuckle axle was replaced by a disc brake, open knuckle Dana 60 for the 1976 model year.

Axle Identification
  1973-1975 Dana 60 Front Axles in Ford Trucks had a Ford Axle Code Tag with the Ford Production Part Number and Dana Bill of Material Number (BOM) stamped on a metal Build Tag (red arrow) attached to the differential by two of the differential cover bolts (yellow arrows) when the vehicle was shipped from the factory but, unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service. The BOM number is a 6 digit number beginning with a 6 plus a dash number (ex: 610604-2). They can be used to determine not only the axle model, but also what components the axle was originally built with. We often ask for this number to insure we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.

Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio. Ford factory parts illustrations specifically show the Closed Knuckle Dana 60 axle was used on Crew Cab F-250 trucks from 1973 to 1975, however, Dana only lists production for the 1974 and 1975 model years. Since the date code on the Ford Axle Tags is a 1973 vintage number, there may have been a few 1973 model year Crew Cab trucks built.

  Axle Shafts: 1973-1975 had 1.25"-19 spline outer axle shafts and the external snap ring axle u-joint has 1-3/16" diameter cups. The u-joint cups do not have seals so ball lubricant can flow into the rollers.

  Wheel Hub: Ford lists only one type of wheel hub for 1973-1975 which is identical the the wheel hub used on Closed Knuckle Dana 44 Heavy-Duty axles of the same years. Dana does list a 1975-1/2 axle (BOM 603628) with a different spindle that does not show in my 1973-1979 Ford Factory Parts Book, so it is possible that 1975-1/2 axle may have the longer wheel hub used on 1976-1977 Ford Dana 60 open knuckle axles.

Axle Shafts
The 30 spline inner Front Axle Shafts for the 1973-1975 Ford Dana 60 closed knuckle axles are no longer available new from any source I know of. The leading cause of axle shaft failure is lack of lubrication in the Knuckle Ball. If the oil leaks out of the Knuckle, your axle u-joints, king pin bearings and axle support bushing(s) go dry. Axle Shaft Seals and Seal Kits for Inner Axle Shafts
An Inner Axle Seal is pressed in the inboard end of each axle tube, right next to the differential side bearings. These seals contact the inner axle shafts to prevent gear oil from running out of the differential and down the axle tubes. Old age, blown axle u-joints, and/or grit that works it's way into the axle tubes and cuts the seal are the usual causes of failure. A bad Inner Axle Shaft Seal can be detected by oil coming out the end of the axle tubes next to the axle shaft u-joint. Usually when these Seals start to fail, they will seep oil so the leakage may go undetected for quite some time. Many a ring and pinion set has been burned up from axles that lost all their lube when long term seepage was not noticed.

Axle Universal Joints
The Closed Knuckle Ford Dana 60 axle uses solid cross, external snap ring universal joints without seals that are designed to be bathed in lubricant from the closed knuckle balls. By today's standards, these u-joints are undersized, but given the lighter vehicle weights and modestly powered engines of the early to mid 1970's, the joint size was adequate. Closed Knuckle Parts

We stock the regular service closed knuckle parts for your Ford F-250 Crew Cab 4x4 with a Dana 60 closed knuckle front axle which will have 12 bolt Knuckle Ball Hemisphere Seals. With a Closed Knuckle axle, the axle universal joints and king pin bearings are lubricated by very heavy oil or a viscous grease that will flow when the axle shafts rotate. A large multi-piece seal is bolted to the backside of the steering knuckle to keep lubricant in and water out. On poorly maintained closed knuckle axles or axles equipped with lockout hubs that are rarely used in 4x4, the upper king pin bearing and axle universal joint can suffer from lack of lubrication. The Ball Seals will usually weep some lubricant especially when standard gear oils are used as a lubricant. Submersion of the axle under water or condensation from temperature changes can cause moisture to build up inside the enclosed ball and lead to corrosion damage and part failures.

Gaskets and Gasket Makers
In the mid 1970's Dana made a differential cover design change to heavy gauge covers with flat mating flanges. Unlike the previous, thin gauge covers with embossed flanges which were made for use with a cut gasket, the new design, thick gauge covers are designed for sealing with RTV. If you desire, you can still use a gasket with the new type cover by combining the gasket with thin films of RTV. We stock both Ultra Gray RTV Sealant and genuine Dana Gaskets. Pinion Seals and Pinion Yokes
The original 1973-1975 Ford Dana 60 pinion yoke used u-bolts to attach the 3-5/8" wide cross of QU40772 unequal length driveshaft universal joint to the pinion yoke. Our new style replacement yoke uses straps and bolts instead of u-bolts to eliminate the cup deformation and reduced u-joint life that typically occurs when u-bolts are over-tightened. Ring and Pinion Kits
Ford only offered 4.10 gearing for 1973-1975 Ford F-250 Crew Cab Dana 60 front axles. Unless your axle has run out of oil or it is severely abused, you will probably never have to replace your original ring and pinion set. However, if you do need one, we stock original equipment Dana-Spicer Gear Sets for your vintage Ford Dana 60 front axle. These genuine gear sets are not cheap when compared to the host of knock off Asian import gear sets being pushed into the market place by vendors focused on getting the cheapest stuff they can. Well, like anything, you get what you pay for. I have been setting up Dana Gear Sets since the mid 1970's to date, and I have never had a setup problem with a genuine Dana-Spicer Gear Set. The same is not true for the aftermarket parts. Besides having sloppy machining, most aftermarket gears are not made to use the Dana factory set up tools, so a person usually has to apply some blood-boiling "Kentucky Windage" to the setup procedure to make progress!
