|1992-1997 Dana 60 Front Axles in Ford F-350 4x4 Trucks will typically have the Ford Build Code on a mylar decal affixed to the right axle tube. Also, the Dana Bill of Material Number (BOM) and Ford Build Code are stamped on a Build Tag (red arrow) attached to the differential by two of the differential cover bolts (yellow arrows) when the vehicle was shipped from the factory but, unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service. The Dana BOM number is also stamped on the front side of the right axle tube. The BOM number is a 6 digit number beginning with a 6 plus a dash number (ex: 610604-2). They can be used to determine not only the axle model, but also what components the axle was originally built with. We often ask for this number to insure we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.
Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio and, for some years, the front wheel hub style (for single or dual rear wheel models).

1992-1997 Ford F-350 Dana 60 front axles have a unique to Ford, reverse spiral ring and pinion set available in either 3.54 or 4.10 gear ratios. The reverse spiral gear sets are not interchangeable with standard gear sets.

Wheel Hub: 1992-1997 Ford Model 60 axles have an internally splined hub in which a splined lockout hub assembly fits into. The wheel hub will vary by year and if vehicle has single or dual rear wheels.

|1998 Bill of Material Numbers||1997 was the last Model year in U.S.A. for this body style F-350, however production continued until the 1999 F-350 Super Duty was released in early 1998. A 1997 model year F-350 built in 1998 should have BOM number 610471.

|Axle Shaft Seals and Seal Kits for Inner Axle Shafts|
|There is an Inner Axle Shaft Oil Seal located on either side of the Differential in 1992-1997 Ford Dana 60 Front Axles. If you are leaking oil out the end of your axle tubes, these are the seals that need to be replaced. At first, 1992 Axles used a conventional one piece seal carried over from 1991. This was replaced by an oil bath type Seal in which the inner portion of the seal rotates within the outer shell. The two seal designs were dimensionally interchangeable, however production of the Oil Bath Type was discontinued and Ford now catalogs the earlier QU40059 Seal as the correct replacement Seal for all 1992-1997 trucks. QU40243 Outboard Axle Shaft to Housing Seal is a Dust Seal that seals against the end of the axle tube. Axle disassembly including differential removal is required to replace the Inner Oil Seals.||Link to Our Ford Web Page Index|

|For the F-350 Dana 60 Front Axle, Ford switched from King Pins to Ball Joints starting with the 1992 Model Year. Ball Joints are a wear item that will require replacement sooner or later. Here in Montana, the factory Ball Joints had an average life of somewhere between 7-10 years in ranch and contractor vehicles. Not bad, but nowhere near the life expectancy of the King Pin parts the earlier trucks used.||

|Our stock of Ford F-350 front brake parts is limited. For the most part, the front brakes generally gave pretty good service that was comparable to the contemporary Dodge and GM 4x4's with one exception. We saw a lot higher percentage of Fords with warped or cracked brake rotors compared to the competition. Whether this was due to the somewhat thinner Ford brake rotor thickness or our Ford customers were harder on their brakes, I can't say, but a F-350 that was used to frequently tow a trailer always seemed to need rotors.||

|Gaskets and Gasket Makers|
|In the mid 1970's Dana made a differential cover design change to heavy gauge covers with flat mating flanges. Unlike the previous, thin gauge covers with embossed flanges which were made for use with a cut gasket, the new design, thick gauge covers are designed for sealing with RTV. If you desire, you can still use a gasket with the new type cover by combining the gasket with thin films of RTV. |Hubs and Lockout Hub Parts|
|1992 Ford F-350 4x4s could be ordered with either automatic or manual hub lucks. For each version there are three different types of hubs used depending upon the year. For automatic hubs, only parts for the 1996-1997 version with a 3 bolt cover are still readily available. Parts for middle production (roughly 1993.5-1995) manual hubs are gone. The early manual hub was a standard Warn model, so parts are available for it. Incidently, since the early hub is still sold by Warn to the aftermarket, you may find it on any 1992-1997 F-350 either as the original hub or as a replacement for factory hubs. The 1995-1997 manual hub with a three bolt cap is still available from Ford as an assembly or sub-assemblies.||Link to Our Ford Web Page Index|

|Pinion Seals and Pinion Yokes|
|Ford used 2 different Pinion Yokes on 1992-1997 era F-350 4x4 Dana 60 Front Axles. The two yokes are identical except for the slinger (deflector) which was used for 1992-1996 but deleted in 1997. The original equipment pinion yokes use QU40841 U-bolts to secure the oversize 1.125" u-joint cups used on the Ford specific 1330F universal joints (See TK40723 and QU40776). The original QU20179 1330F Pinion Yokes are now out of production although we still have some available as of September 2011. A less expensive and more readily available alternative to the original yoke is to replace the 1330F u-joint with a straight 1330 U-joint (TK40721, (QU40774) and use QU40713 1330 series pinion yokes.||Link to Our Ford Web Page Index At the Bottom of This Page|

|Ring and Pinion Kits|
|1992-1997 Ford F-350 front Dana 60 axles have reverse spiral pinion gears that are set above the axle center line. The reverse spiral gear sets are probably not quite as strong as the standard cut gearing, but the high pinion significantly reduces front driveshaft angles and the extra ground clearance helps keep the pinion yoke and front driveshaft u-joint out of harm's way. |The Spindles for 1992-1997 Ford F-350 Dana 60 4x4 Front Axles are the same but different Spindle Nuts are used depending upon the lock out hubs option. Manual Hub equipped trucks use a three piece Round Spindle Nut and Washer set. Trucks with Auto Hubs use a single Rounded Hex Nut. The Spindle Nuts are NOT interchangeable for use with either hub style so if you are converting your Hub-Locks from auto to manual or vise-versa, you will also have to change the Spindle Nuts to match the new hubs.||Link to Our Ford Web Page Index|

|Spindle Bearings and Seals|
|The dead, hollow spindle design of the 1992-1997 era Ford F-350 Dana 60 series axles uses QU40149 needle bearing to support the outer axle shaft. The two part Spindle Seal and Thrust Washer design was new for 1992, replacing the earlier four piece set-up used from 1978-1991.
