Parts and Tools for GM 8.5" 10 Bolt Front Axles in 1977-1991 GM 4x4 Trucks
We stock a number of parts for the GM 10 Bolt solid front 4x4 drive axle. GM introduced the corporate, 10 Bolt, 8-1/2" Ring Gear, beam type solid 4x4 front drive axle during the 1977 model year. The new axle was available for higher speed gear ratios than was the Dana Spicer Model 44 front axle which GM continued to use for certain ratios until 1980. Although the differential parts are totally different, the 1977 to 1981 GM Dana 44 and the GM 10 Bolt front axles share a lot of common parts from the axle u-joints out to the hubs. The GM 10 Bolt front axle was used on Chevy and GMC 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton 4x4 pickups from 1977 to 1987 and on Blazer/Jimmy, and Suburban SUVs from 1977 through 1991.

Axle Shafts and Axle Slingers
The 19 spline outer axle shafts for all 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt front axles is the same. The Inner Shafts were made with two different spline counts. Up until mid model year 1989, all the inner shafts are 28 spline. Subsequent axles have 30 spline inner axle shafts.  
QU40221 19 Spline Outer Axle Shaft for 1977 to 1989.5 Chevy, GMC Corporate GM 10 Bolt Front Axle is a genuine original equipment outer axle stub shaft for all GM 10 Bolt front axles in 1977 to 1989.5 Chevy Blazers, GMC Jimmys, and Suburbans, plus Chevy, GMC 4x4 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton Pickups. The splined end on these new axle shafts has three snap ring grooves in three places so they are compatible with all types of automatic and manual lockout hubs plus all full-time solid splined drive gears.

QU40058 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt Outer Axle Shaft Slinger acts both as a crud deflector and a sealing surface on open knuckle axles. Replace anytime they are dinged, bent, or badly corroded.
     
Axle Shaft Inner Oil Seals and Seal Kits
An Inner Axle Seal is pressed in the inboard end of each axle tube, right next to the differential side bearings. These seals contact the inner axle shafts to prevent gear oil from running out of the differential and down the axle tubes. Old age, blown axle u-joints, and/or grit that works it's way into the axle tubes and cuts the seal are the usual causes of failure. A bad Inner Axle Shaft Seal can be detected by oil coming out the end of the axle tubes next to the axle shaft u-joint. Usually when these Seals start to fail, they will seep oil so the leakage may go undetected for quite some time. Many a ring and pinion set has been burned up from axles that lost all their lube when long term seepage was not noticed. Axle Universal Joints
We offer three different Universal Joints for your hard working 1977 to 1991 Chevy or GMC 4x4 SUV or Truck with a GM 10 Bolt solid front axle. All are good, reliable products, but different manufacturing techniques and seal types will have a major influence on the ultimate life of the joint. Our most popular choice is our TK40712 cold-forged, non-greaseable, original equipment replacement U-Joint. The wear-resistant cold-forged cross and superior sealing make it the best choice for both low maintenance and long life. QU40754 and QU90007 have hot-forged crosses. They are greaseable through a flush fitting threaded into one of the caps. With good maintenance and quality lubricant like our Pyroplex® Plus Grease, these joints will last and last. Ball Joints
The 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt Beam Type open knuckle front axle uses replaceable Ball Joints pressed into the steering knuckle. Both Ball Joints are weight bearing. A threaded adjuster that screws into the upper hole of the axle yoke is used to provide preload on the Ball Joints. Dana, who supplied these parts to GM, has modified the seal configuration on the current production parts, but the high quality and basic Ball Joint design has remained unchanged since the early 1970's. Over the years we have found the average Ball Joint life of our non-greaseable, factory Ball Joints to be 7 to 10 years for vehicles used as daily drivers and/or work vehicles. Brake Parts
On 1977-1980 GM 10 Bolt front axles, the Caliper Support Plate/Brake Shield assemblies will vary by both year and model. For the Caliper Support Plate/Brake Shield assemblies, 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton parts are always different as the 3/4 ton trucks have a larger diameter rotor. From 1977 and 1978, both left and right Caliper Support Plate/Brake Shields assemblies are the same on both sides of your axle. Differential Parts
The only major internal change to the GM 10 Bolt beam type 4x4 front axle during it's entire production life was a change from 28 to 30 spline differential side gears and axle shafts during the 1989 model year. Link to our GM Web Page Index

Hubs and Hub Parts
Over the entire 15 year production life of the GM 10 Bolt 8.5" beam type front axle, only two hub and rotors were used, a 6 bolt version for 1/2 ton models and a 8 bolt version for 3/4 tons. The hub driving parts however, are a different story. For 1977-1979 Spicer Plastic Dial Hubs were used on trucks with NP205 transfer cases and solid steel hub drive gears equipped vehicles with NP203 full time transfer cases. Spicer hubs came on all 1980 trucks. I believe 1981 models all used Warn M248 plastic dial hubs, but both my memory and the GM parts books are a little vague on the issue. In 1982 GM started using automatic locking hubs. Auto hubs of different designs would continue to be used right through 1991. Warn M248 plastic dial hubs might be found as factory equipment on some work trucks from 1982-1991, but they were also the hub of choice for replacing the often unreliable auto hubs. The auto hub reliability did improve over the years, but a great many of them failed within 5 years.

Spindles and Spindle Nuts
1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt Front Axles use a double spindle nut set with a lockwasher for front wheel bearing adjustment and retention. The inner and outer nuts are the same for all years, but the Lockwasher was changed in 1982 when automatic locking hubs were introduced. The Inner Nut has a pin that engages with one of the holes in the lockwasher. The Outer Nut is a jam nut.

Spindle Bearings and Seals
The dead spindle design of the 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt front axle uses a needle bearing to support the outer axle shaft. To protect the bearing and control axial thrust, a 4 piece set consisting of an Axle Shaft Slinger, Large V-Seal, Small V-Seal, and Thrust Washer was used. Steering Knuckles
GM used several different steering knuckles in 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt front axles. The differences are in the length of the spindle studs, the tie rod mounts and whether or not there is a tapped hole that takes a small bolt used to stabilize the brake shield. Steering Linkage Parts
1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt front axles use a short, adjustable drag link that couples the steering gear pitman arm to the axle steering arm bolted to the top of the left knuckle. A long, adjustable tie rod attaches to the integral knuckle steering arms. Link to Our GM Web Page Index

Wheel Bearings and Seals (Individual)

Wheel Bearing and Seal Kits
General Motors used the same wheel bearing and seal numbers for the entire 1977 to 1991 production run of GM 10 Bolt front drive axles. However, spindle nut parts and lockout hub parts will vary by year, so order those components as needed from the sections above.
