Parts for IHC Scout and Jeep 4x4s with Dana Spicer Model 25 or Model 27 Closed Knuckle Front Axles
Page Under Construction, More Parts to be Added Soon!
Jeep used Dana 25 closed knuckle front axles in all the small military (M-series), wagon/truck utility models, and FC150 pickup with 48" front tread width (production of all these vehicles ended by 1966). The Dana 25 was also used on civilian CJ Universal models through 1960. From 1961 to around 1965, both the Dana 25 and Dana 27 were used in the CJ Universal after which it appears to have been entirely superceded by the Dana 27. For Jeep, the Dana 27, which was produced in both a solid beam and a rare Independent Front Suspension (IFS) configuration, first appeared with the 1962 Wagoneer and it was used on the Wagoneer line through 1970. The Dana 27 was also used on the CJ Universal line and C101 Commandos from 1966 through 1971. In Wagoneers, the Dana 27 was replaced by a closed knuckle Dana 30 for the 1971 model year. The Dana 27 was superceded in CJ and Commando models with the new Dana 30 open knuckle front axle effective with the 1972 model year. To the best of our information, 1961 International Scouts were the first production vehicle to be equipped with a Dana 27. International went to a Dana 30 closed knuckle axle for Scout in about 1967.

Axle Shaft Seals

QU40628 Inner Axle Shaft Oil Seal for Dana 25 and Dana 27 Closed Knuckle Axles Two of these Seals, which are used in conjunction with reusable axle shaft guides are installed in each axle assembly. They are located at the inner end of the axle tubes next to the differential bearings.

Axle Universal Joints
The Jeep Closed Knuckle Dana 25 and Dana 27 axles use solid cross, inside lock-up universal joints without seals that are designed to be bathed in a semi-liquid lubricant from inside the closed knuckle balls. By today's standards, these u-joints are way undersized, but given the lighter vehicle weights and modestly powered engines of the early 1970's, the joint size was probably adequate. Some Jeep models including the early Wagoneers with optional IFS front axles had Rzeppa CV axle joints. We do not have any Rzeppa CV parts. Link to Our Jeep Web Page Index

Closed Knuckle Parts
We stock the regular service closed knuckle parts for your 1941-1971 Jeep or 1961-1966 IHC Scout 4x4 with a closed knuckle Dana 25 or Dana 27 front axle which will have 8 bolt Knuckle Ball Hemisphere Seals. With a Closed Knuckle axle, the axle universal joints and king pin bearings are lubricated by very heavy oil or a viscous grease that will flow when the axle shafts rotate. A large, multi-piece seal is bolted to the backside of the steering knuckle to keep lubricant in and water out. On poorly maintained closed knuckle axles or axles equipped with lockout hubs that are rarely used in 4x4, the upper king pin bearing and axle universal joint can suffer from lack of lubrication. The Ball Seals will usually weep some lubricant especially when standard gear oils are used as a lubricant. Submersion of the axle under water or condensation from temperature changes can cause moisture to build up inside the enclosed ball and lead to corrosion damage and part failures. Spindles and Spindle Nuts
1945-1971 Jeep CJs with manual lock-out hubs or solid drive flanges use the same four piece spindle nut parts as the World War II military MA and MB Jeeps. A thrust washer is used between the outer wheel bearing and inner spindle nut. The inner nut adjusts the wheel bearing end-play. The outer nut functions as a lock nut, it is held in place by a bend-over lock washer located between the two nuts. Vehicles with Warn Lock-O-Matic Hubs require special lockwashers and round outer nuts. Link to Our Jeep Web Page Index
